Official Devon Open Studios Microsite

Devon Open Studios: 12–20 September 2026

Devon Open Studios is a nine-day celebration of artists, art, and the unique experience of visiting working studios across the county.

Across Devon, painters, sculptors, printmakers, ceramicists, jewellers, textile artists and more open their doors to reveal the ideas, materials and processes behind their work. It’s a rare chance to step behind the scenes and see how artists create.

The event is free to attend, and visitors are encouraged to support local creativity by buying directly from artists, whether a major artwork or a small, meaningful piece.

Participants range from emerging talent to established professionals. Many draw inspiration from Devon’s rich natural world — its coastlines, wildlife, flora and varied landscapes — making every studio visit a distinct and personal encounter with creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the dates for Devon Open Studios 2026?

Devon Open Studios will take place from 12–20 September 2026.

Why have the dates changed?

Following feedback from artists, the event has moved to a more focused, festival-style format. Concentrating activity into one clear period helps build momentum, attract audiences, and create a shared sense of occasion across the county.

Can I open my studio for longer than the festival dates?

Yes. Artists may open for as many or as few days as they wish during the festival period, and those who choose to open outside the core dates can still list their full opening dates and times in the printed guide and on the website.

2. Fees & Fairness

Have the fees changed for 2026?

Yes. The fee structure has been revised to be fairer, clearer and more flexible, for individual artists, and artists working in groups.

How are fees calculated now?

Fees are worked out on a per-participant basis, so everyone contributes proportionally to the size of their group. This ensures fairness while still benefiting from shared costs. Devon Open Studios fees were last reviewed over seven years ago. The current structure reflects rising print, production and staffing costs, while aiming to distribute participation fees more fairly across solo artists and groups.

What do I get for my fee?

Your fee covers:

  • Inclusion in Devon’s largest, artist-led, non-profit Open Studios event
  • A professionally produced printed guide (25,000+ copies)
  • A dedicated online profile to showcase your work with images, maps and links
  • Commission-free sales (you keep 100%)
  • County-wide PR and press promotion, led by our PR Manager
  • Social media amplification in the run-up to the event
  • Practical online workshops to support your self-promotion
  • Access to a supportive, artist-led network
  • Opportunities to collaborate, cross-promote and reach new audiences

Many artists tell us DOS becomes a turning point — renewing creative energy, building confidence, and opening doors they didn’t expect.

5. Groups, Pairs & Shared Venues

Can I take part as part of a group or shared venue?

Yes. Artists can participate as individuals, pairs, or groups of any size, provided all participants are members of Devon Artist Network (DAN).

Will I still have my own listing if I’m in a group?

Yes. Once the group has registered and paid, each participating artist can create their own individual web listing, linked to the main group listing.

Registration & Deadlines When does registration open and close?

Registration opens: 2 February 2026
Registration extended to 15 April 2026

Places are limited and the event is often oversubscribed, so early registration is advised.

What do I need to register?

You will need:

  • Your artist or group name
  • An admin email address
  • Venue address
  • One high-quality image for the printed guide
  • Payment by debit or credit card (via Stripe)

6. Opening Times & Commitments

Do I need to open every day?

No. You choose which days you open during the festival period. However, artists who open for more days often find it easier to build an audience over time.

What if I have to withdraw?

A stepped refund policy applies depending on when you withdraw, reflecting work already completed on the guide and event organisation. Full details are provided in the Terms & Conditions.

7. Support, Promotion & Responsibilities Who promotes Devon Open Studios?

Promotion is a shared effort. Devon Artist Network coordinates county-wide marketing, press activity and social media, led by a dedicated PR Manager and supported by a Social Media Assistant in the lead-up to the event. This includes press coverage, online promotion and skills-building workshops to help artists promote their own work. Artists are encouraged to promote their own studios locally using the guidance, training and promotional materials provided.

Do I need insurance?

Yes. All artists must have appropriate Public Liability Insurance for their venue. Guidance and affordable options are available if needed.

8. Need more help?
