Painting
Belinda Reynell is an acclaimed contemporary landscape artist who lives and works in Devon. She immerses herself in the landscape where she finds freedom and a love of space. Subsequently she works in her studio employing her sentiments and a sense of the place to create her art.
Printmaking and Painting
Jess Davies is a printmaker working mostly in linocut and monoprint techniques. Her work is based in landscape, and she often uses unusual, striking, but simple compositions to evoke the essence of a place. She is known for her use of both strong and earthy colour palettes, as well as her use of texture. Jess is a member of MAKE SouthWest.
For DOS this year, Jess will also be showing a selection of new abstract paintings, in addition to prints. Currently her work is based around hut circle ruins on Dartmoor.
Ceramics
Laurel makes individual ceramic forms in stoneware, with applied clay slips, stains and glaze. The work is textured and incised, and freely painted with colours that reflect landscape and season. Her work often has elements of design that refer to specific locations; it can be coiled, slabbed or thrown, or any combination of these techniques. Recent work explores the relationship of Poetry with Ceramics.
Painting and Mixed Media
Louise Hutton creates expressive paintings inspired by dreams, the wild spaces of Devon and Cornwall and a recent rainforest stay in Costa Rica. She works in acrylics, ink and collage on canvas, wood and paper from her home studio in Tiverton.
Printmaking and Painting
Mandi Street is a printmaker and painter based in Exeter. Her work focuses on the landscape she explores in her walks. She features in many local exhibitions including the SWAC Annual Open and Delamore Arts.
Ceramics
I have been working in domestic ware for a couple of years now. I began my ceramic career as a sculptor, describing my work as ceramic illustration. I now use my pots surfaces to illustrate, from story, poems, song and life on the farm in North Devon. I am using traditional North Devon techniques, sgraffito and slip trailing, honey glazed earthenware, but with my own take on it. I hope to bring the sculptural and domestic together eventually but am concentrating mainly on the thrown forms at present.
Woodworking
Rosie Brewer is a Mid Devon woodworker who creates a mix of hand made functional cooking utensils, chopping boards, hair sticks and also decorative carved pieces. Each item Rosie creates is thoughtfully considered, taking inspiration from the grain of the wood to find its final form. Taming the wildwood for modern lives. Everything is lovingly crafted from a wide range of sustainably sourced wood species and almost all locally grown.
Basketry
Jane Welsh is a professional willow and rush basket maker based in Mid Devon. She makes, sells and teaches throughout the South West. She specialises in home basketry ware from lampshades to shopping baskets.
Ceramics
Following a career as an illustrator I learned the basics of working with clay and got the bug for this process. For the past few years, I have immersed myself in the pottery world – attending workshops and demos, joining groups and becoming a member of Westcountry Potters Association, all of which have helped me develop my technique and style. I create characterful pieces with the aim of making people smile. I take some inspiration from everyday life, but a lot comes from my imagination. I hand build ceramic pieces from stoneware clay then decorate by hand with coloured slips, under-glazes and oxides. I particularly love creating quirky, characters and find my illustrative style comes through in what I make.
This year I am taking part in a variety of shows and fairs including a few 3 day events - Potfest (south-east), Exeter Craft Festival, Buckfast Abbey and Dartington Christmas Makers Market.
Drawing and painting
After many years of making quite involved black and white abstract work I have fallen back in love with colour, painting and drawing. I have been creating more poetic images inspired by our great stories and myths from the ancient past. These stories and characters still have much to teach us today.
Painting, printing, mixed media
My work explores how we can use the act of making as an ‘offloader’ for thought.
Each piece is a record of sensory experiences that would have otherwise remained unprocessed.
I enjoy curating joyful and peaceful moments for the viewer from these internal maps, by choosing to show only specific areas of each piece.
